Chapter Sixteen

I head back into the office, coffee in hand. It’s been, what, four whole hours since I was here last? We wrapped up going over the footage around three-thirty and called it, having not found anything useful. Liam drove me and Timber back home before heading back to his place for a set of clean clothes and a couple hours of shuteye. Instead of putting him out again, I had Uber pick me up and drive me to work this morning, promising Timber that Tess would be by later to take him on a walk.

Thankfully, he did great last night, which I knew he would. It was nice having him around; it gave me a sense of comfort while we worked, even if we didn’t make much progress.

Even though I was exhausted, I didn’t sleep very well. I can’t quite figure out what Simon’s agenda is. Despite having all this documentation about his supposed beliefs and these manifestos—which may or may not be directly from him—the man is an enigma. But I think it all comes back to his name in some way: Simon Magus. A man who wanted to buy religion. A self-proclaimed magician, or sorcerer.

Was he looking for access to an even higher source of power, and was willing to pay anything to get it? Or was he trying to corrupt the church by turning it into a financial transaction? So that only the rich and powerful could have access to God? From what research I’ve done, and it’s open to interpretation, but the general consensus was the man was the impetus for keeping money out of Christianity, so that it would be accessible to all people.

And yet, this Simon’s first target is a bank. What does that mean? Obviously, money is the common denominator here, so does that mean all of his targets will be financial in nature? And how many does he have planned?

“Morning,” I say, taking a seat at my workstation in the makeshift command center. Sandel is already hard at work, but there’s no sign of Nadia or Liam yet.

“Good morning,” he says, though there’s no warmth behind it. The man can be such a computer sometimes.

“Did you actually go home and sleep or do robots not need rest?” I ask, bringing my computer to life.

“I slept here,” he says. Looking around my workstation, I now see that he’s in the same clothes as yesterday.

“Sandel, go home. Get some real rest. Take a shower, change clothes. All of this will be here when you get back.”

“Not all of us have that luxury,” he replies.

“Why not? Because you’re the case agent?” I ask. “You’re allowed to take a break. In fact, you’re compromising yourself and the rest of the team right now by not taking the appropriate time off. You’re going to run yourself into the ground, then you’re not going to be good to anyone.”

He doesn’t look up, only continues to study whatever is on his screen. “It’s my responsibility to stay here and make sure things—”

“Everything will be fine without you for a few hours,” I say.
